Bamboo Plywood Cutting Board

Bamboo Plywood Cutting Board

One day, we were answering a fun questionnaire that asked what kitchen item we'd be, and amusingly, we both chose a cutting board. A cutting board is a kitchen staple, coming in various shapes, sizes, and materials.

For years, Anthony has been dissatisfied with our cutting boards. Finally, we decided to make our own! We designed it to be bigger than our current boards but still small enough to fit in the sink for easy washing. We chose bamboo for its durability and eco-friendliness—it’s tougher than most woods, so it resists scarring and denting from knives.

Process

  1. Cut
Having decided on the dimensions of our cutting board, 40x30cm using our track saw we were able to cut out accurate blocks the exact size we wanted.
  2. Chamfer
Using our router with a flush chamfer bit, we were able to apply our signature asymmetric top and bottom chamfers
  3. Sand
Understanding the purpose of the chopping board and that it it will be need to stand up to the abuse of daily use in a kitchen, we knew that it would need to be finished appropriately. Sanding to 120grit, raising the grain with water and resanding leaves the board with a smooth finish that is able to obscure knife markings and accept a copious amount of protective oil.
  4. Etch
What MelonPickle product is complete without our logo, which we laser etch tastefully into the corner of the top of the board so that it is visible yet out of the way of your daily use
  5. Finish
This comprised a multi step process of cleaning off any dust and residue with Isopropyl Alcohol then at least 3 coats of Food Safe Linseed Oil. We kept applying until the boards would not absorb any more, meaning that the finish was absorbed deeply into the bamboo adding even more water resistance to the already water resistant properties of bamboo.

Because of its beauty, simplicity, and practicality, our new cutting board has earned a permanent spot on the kitchen bench. It's always ready for action, making it both a functional and attractive addition to our kitchen.
