Giant Jenga

Giant Jenga

For our wedding, we aimed to infuse every aspect with our personal touch. Since Anthony and I share a love for board games, we knew outdoor games would be a hit. Among them, Giant Jenga stole the show. Despite the limited options in stores, none matched our vision. So, we took matters into our own hands and crafted our very own Giant Jenga set from scratch, ensuring it reflected our style and preferences perfectly.

Process:

  1. Sourcing and Milling the lumber
We decided to use 2x4 as our base stock, so that gave us our starting dimension. However as this lumber is not very aesthetic, we sent it through the jointer and thicknesser to get crispy milled lumber which is all the same dimension, to the millimeter.
  2. Cut the pieces
With the lumber milled we measured our final dimensions, and multiplied it by 3 to gain our length. It was then a simple matter of setting up a stop block on our Miter Saw to cut all 54 pieces.
  3. Chamfering the edges
Wanting a certain joie de vivre we didn't think straight rectangular blocks were up to standard, so we then applied a chamfer to all face edges to make them look nicer, feel nicer in the hand, as well as to reduce the friction from the large surface area of our blocks.
  4. Sanding
Then began the long process of sanding each block up to 300 grit. This was to ensure that the blocks were nice and smooth to ensure they slid against each other easily,
  5. Finishing
In order to add a little more interest, we chose to stain half of the pieces with a beautiful Jarrah stain. And then finished all of the pieces with a paste wax to waterproof and add even more friction reduction.

This Giant Jenga has been such a hit. We have lent this to friends and family members and everyone seems to love playing with it.
